Your essential moving tips for a smooth move

Moving house is one of life’s most exciting—and sometimes stressful—events.

As your trusted removal company, we want to ensure your move day goes as smoothly as possible.

Here are our comprehensive tips, whether you choose to use our professional packing solutions or prefer to pack everything yourself.

Pre-Move organisation and planning

Effective planning significantly reduces stress on the day. Start early—ideally, 6-8 weeks before your move date.

  • Create a Master Checklist: This should cover everything from utility switches to school transfers. Break it down into weekly, then daily, tasks.

  • Confirm Your Inventory: Provide us with the most accurate list of items possible (including garage, loft, and garden items). If you’ve had a clear-out since our initial quote, let us know!

  • Notify Essential Parties:

    • Utilities: Arrange final readings for gas, electricity, and water at your old property and set up accounts at your new home.

    • Council Tax/Electoral Roll: Inform your local council of your change of address.

    • Insurance: Update your contents and buildings insurance policies. We offer excellent transit insurance, but check your current coverage.

    • Post Office: Set up a mail redirection service well in advance (Royal Mail offers this service for a fee).

  • Parking and Access: Check with both your current and new local councils regarding any parking restrictions or the need for a suspension or permit for the removal vehicle. This is crucial for smooth loading/unloading.

The self-packing customer's guide

If you’ve opted not to use our professional packing service, follow these essential guidelines to protect your belongings and ensure efficiency.

Essential packing Materials

  • Use quality boxes: Invest in double-walled boxes. Cheaper, single-wall boxes or second-hand supermarket boxes often collapse under the weight of stacking, risking damage to contents.

  • Tape is your friend: Use strong packing tape. Tape both the top and bottom of the box using the H-method (tape along the main seam, and then two strips across the ends).

  • Protective wrap: Use plenty of bubble wrap, acid-free tissue paper, and clean packing paper. Avoid using newspaper directly on items, as the print can transfer.

Packing strategy

  • Don’t overload: Keep boxes to a manageable weight, typically under 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs). Use small boxes for heavy items like books or tools, and larger boxes for lighter, bulkier items like cushions or bedding.

  • Label clearly: Every box must be clearly labelled on at least two sides (the side, not just the top) with:

    1. The room it belongs in (e.g., Master Bedroom, Kitchen, Study).

    2. A brief description of the contents.

    3. A warning for FRAGILE or THIS WAY UP if necessary.

    4. Packing for transit: Fill all voids in the box with crumpled paper or packing peanuts to prevent items from shifting during transit. Never leave a box partially packed.

Utilising our professional packing solutions

If you’ve decided to take the stress out of packing, our professional, uniformed team will handle everything efficiently and safely.

  • Preparation: Even with our service, clear surfaces and de-clutter as much as possible beforehand. This helps our team focus on the items you wish to move.

  • Personal items/documentation: Ensure all sensitive documents (passports, legal papers, medical records) and valuables (jewellery, laptops, cash) are stored in a designated, secure box that you will transport yourself. Our team will not pack these for security reasons.

  • Kitchen: We use specialised, high-strength boxes for crockery and glassware. Your kitchen will be packed efficiently, often in a single day.

  • Wardrobe boxes: We provide hanging wardrobe boxes on the day of the move. This allows us to transfer clothing straight from your closet, keeping it clean and crease-free.

Move day essentials (the "survival" kit)

Regardless of who packs the bulk of your home, pack an essential box for the final night and first morning in your new home, and ensure it travels with you.

Key Contents:

  • Kettle, tea/coffee, milk, snacks.

  • Toilet roll, basic cleaning supplies, hand soap.

  • Basic tool kit (screwdriver, hammer, utility knife for opening boxes).

  • Medication, essential toiletries, and a change of clothes.

  • Phone chargers.

  • Important contact numbers and documents.

On the day of the move

Help us help you on the big day!

  • Be Present: The client or a designated adult must be present at both properties to oversee the process and answer any questions.

  • Clear Access: Ensure all hallways, stairs, and entrances are clear of clutter and boxes so our team can move efficiently and safely.

  • Final Checks: Once the lorry is loaded, do a thorough walk-through of every room, cupboard, and the loft/garage to ensure nothing has been left behind. This is your final chance before handing over the keys!
